Your Weekly Digestion of Food News....Rice Krispie Got Me!
Sometimes you are out for a Saturday stroll around town and a street fair pops up! Okay, not really, it happens every Saturday in South Lake Union, but where’s the story fun in that? I came on this particular Saturday because they said their was gonna be handful of food trucks and I do love me some food from a truck. But, as usual with my food mood, I wasn’t just feeling it with the handful that were there. Thus I wandered among the stalls to see if anything else was gonna attract my stomach. And then lo-and-behold what does my wandering eye catch sight of, but a booth of homemade Rice Krispie treats. They call themselves Browned & Toasted, offering up brown butter, hand made, real Rice Krispie treats. The basic recipe is the one we all know from our childhood, just with the addition of brown butter.
What Is that? Brown butter, also known as buerre noisette in French, is made by heating butter until the milk solids caramelize, imparting a golden color and toasted, nutty flavor. The French technique is an easy way to ramp up the flavor of regular butter without adding any extra ingredients—which is exactly what is happening here. They had samples of the classic version and the flavor of it comes through loud and tasty. It was like a sense memory flashback to a time when we as kids played outside and Saturday morning cartoons were fun! I had to buy one and was drawn to the chocolate with added chunks of 55% chocolate, browned butter, small-batch marshmallow, toasted crispy rice cereal, beef gelatin, cocoa, vanilla, kosher salt.
Okay, the beef gelatin thing was a little weird to read but I’m guessing it gives structure and the vanilla adds some depth of flavor against the chocolate, though, I could not actually taste either one. What I got was blast of chocolate and nice undertones of the brown butter. I did quite like it and it held up well with a smear of peanut butter. A flavor variety you can also get from them. It was also quite large and I did not eat in one sitting, which was nice since this will set you back about $7. Maybe pricey for something you can make at home, but again, it is big and made by hand and supporting local so I give it a pass compared to the cost of other sweets around this town. Overall, this was a treat and I will probably get one again and go classic for that old school taste but the ones with blueberries did look interesting. Plus, they are gluten free, so indulge! Though just a bit since, you know, the sugar thing. But whatever, I did walk all the way to South Lake Union and back up to Capitol Hill, so I’m good.
