Food news nosh and yes....a doughnut for your morning
What better way to start your work week than with a doughnut bigger than a bagel. That is what you will get at Johnny Doughnuts. I finally managed to get by their new Hayes Valley brick and mortar location 1--while they were still open and 2--when they actually had some doughnuts left to choose from. Seems the place is quite popular, much like their food truck version. I know I've been a fan of most everything I have tried. The apple fritter being one of my faves. This time around, it was late in the day and the supply was dwindling, but I did see this lime poppy seed and a hit of tangy citrus seemed just the thing. Normally they do this in light airy version but today it was available as an old-fashioned. A thick cakey doughnut with a puckery lime sugar icing on top. More than enough to get the lime in most every bite. While enjoy one of the puffed up donuts, the old fashions offer the heft I crave in desserts. Plus their doughnuts are huge, which is nice considering the price. Bigger (and I think better) than the ones you find at Dynamo Donut for the same price. Can you tell I'm of big fan of Johnny? I mean I have to have someplace since my block away local Happy Donuts closed suddenly. Sadly, Johnny isn't open 24/7 for when I desire one, but at least I know they are there for me to get my fix. Now here's yours of food news.
Well, so long finally to the Haight McD's. When it opened a Big Mac would set you back 65 cents. Now, seems a spliff was cheaper.
Those Tartine people and that Kronnerburger guy are teaming up to take over a hotel space.
Che Fico opens on Divis as Chicago culinary alums try to make in SF with their own spin on Italian.
A handful of Chronicle food writers take on restaurant harassment. Why is only one of them a woman? At least East Bay Express went straight to a female bartender for some true insights.
That purveyor of salads to FiDi crowd is expanding to the Mission as they open a salad lounge in the old La Rondalla space. Wait, what? A salad lounge?
"Silicon Valley" perfectly skewers the ridiculous preponderance of food start ups in town.
It's a Dorito melt, but only for a short time, unless it sells well or something. I'll pass since it's another over $10 sandwich.
Sure, it was an April Fools joke, but in this day of bizarre foods and whatever Taco Bell is doing, it would probably work.
And here are a bunch more food fools that could right on the edge of believability.
Salt + Straw asked kids to come up with some ice cream flavors. Couldn't be any worse than some adults come up with and no, this isn't an April Fool's thing.
You have been warned! Though I think I called this when I tried 'em.
