Food truck quick bite: The Codmother Fish & Chips....a reason to got to Pier 39?

So this is what it's like being employed! That is right, gots me a full time job and suddenly....poof, there goes the free time and my semi-regular posting time. Guess I will have to readjust things now and try to do all those things regularly employed people do, just in my spare time. It has been so long I think I have forgotten how to juggle it all. Thus I'm kicking it off with a quickie!

As ones who actually live in SF, sometimes we tend to scoff or shrug off the touristy spots as gauche and...overrun with tourists....why would we go there? But you do have friends/family who come to town to visit and it isn't all bad. One spot in particular, which has been around awhile and gets high marks from many people is The Codmother Fish & Chips.

Now I'm not one to run off to Pier 39 myself, but I am a fan of beer battered deep fried fish with a side of fries and occasionally crave it, but don't really want to pay like sit down restaurant prices for it. It is kind of what brought me by here on a mid-week, overcast day to satisfy my craving. I'd been aware of the place for some time and was like, "I really need to get by and try them out." I know, I say that about a lot of places in town and I do mean. And I do, eventually, get around to places. Codmothers time had come.

They have a menu of various fried seafoods you can get in a basket with fries or as a sandwich, if you want your carbs in white flour form instead of potatoes. Since fish and chips is in the name, I decided not to go overboard with fried things and just zero in on their classic fish and chips which will run you $10.

It's two large-ish pieces of cod thickly beer battered and deep fried served with house cut french fries and a side of tartar sauce. I will give thumbs up for portion size and price, considering this is down in touristville where prices seem to be on the higher side of things.

Each basket seems to be made to order, or it was on the day I went, which is a big plus as both the fish and fries come out super hot and crispy. The crust on the fish gives a nice crack crunch when you pull it apart and maintains the crispiness pretty well. Dip it in the tartar sauce and it is quite a tasty bite. It is a comfort food nosh for sure and definitely right on for those of us into deep fried anything. The fries were also really good. Hot and crispy outside, soft and steamy inside. And on the good side or surprising for something so deep fried, you don't get a greasy taste or feeling from them--a top notch bonus. All around, it was a satisfying basket of fish and chips.

Should you venture down to Pier 39 just to try it? Sure, why not, it is one of the better fried baskets you will get in town with fresh fish and crispy hot fries at a price that is mostly tourist and locals friendly. You can enjoy it with friends and family who come to visit or on your own. The place is a actually a few blocks over from the heart of the pier so you can avoid most of the crowds which is probably best. I would also suggest eating it at the picnic tables there too instead of sitting out in the open since this could happen. You don't have to like touristy parts of town but The Codmother Fish & Chips will serve up some deep fried goodness you will enjoy.
