Take an apple hand pie break with some food news

apple hand pie from Neighbor Bakehouse $4.25

By the looks of my photos, I think I need to change the blog title to the King of Brown Food. It isn't like I'm trying to eat that color, seems it just turns out like that most of the time. But hey, I did have brussels sprouts recently and they are green! This week since my jaunt into Cafe Lambretta didn't quite turn up baked good goodies I was jazzed about, I figured I would run back by old fave Neighbor Bakehouse and since what was new since it had been awhile for visit. He's got a lot of the bestsellers still around and looks like they've added some pie and cake, though since it was only 9am, those weren't quite ready yet. That is when I turned my attention to the apple hand pie. I balked a little bit at the price as for me, anything over $4 better be big and super delicious.

It was definitely on the bigger side than say ones you'd get at a fast food restaurant. Plus, it was chock full of small square apple pieces and cinnamon. All the flavors are right there. The outer crust is somewhere between pastry and croissant, but seems this particular one was on the flakey, crumbly side of things which you can probably tell by the darker than normal color. Also, these were most likely made a couple hours ago, which is fine, but for my taste, I think hand held pies like this really shine if they are still warm. The crust is still on the soft side and the apple filling is hot and tasty. Not being warm kind of takes away a bit from this one. So of course I popped it in the toaster for some heat which did soften things up a bit, though it was still mega flakey and an falling apart. My only other option was to slather on some butter and just enjoy it as some salty sweet crunchy bread with a nice apple cinnamon flavor. Yes, butter makes everything better, have some with this weeks food news.
